I was referred to this practice by a physician who had thoughtfully evaluated my condition and reached the limits of his specialty. He referred me to a neuro-otology practice he respected. After waiting approximately three months for this appointment and completing the required audiology evaluation beforehand, I expected a comprehensive specialty consultation that would build upon months of testing, referrals, imaging, audiology, vestibular studies, and documentation already available in Epic.Unfortunately, I left feeling that my complex medical history was never truly heard. On several occasions, I asked if we could slow down so I could explain my history and symptoms, but I was interrupted before I could finish. Each time I attempted to return to the progression of my illness, my documented findings, my functional limitations, or the impact this illness has had on my life and ability to work over the past five months, the conversation was redirected before I could complete my thoughts. I was never given a meaningful opportunity to explain why I had been referred or what I was hoping to gain from this consultation. The encounter felt driven by checklist questions on a computer screen rather than by listening to the patient sitting in front of the provider. Patients with complex illnesses cannot always be understood through predefined questions alone. They deserve the opportunity to tell their story, explain the progression of their illness, and have a clinician integrate months of referrals, testing, imaging, and specialist evaluations into a thoughtful assessment.I came seeking a specialist who could help coordinate with my entire medical team, including providers both inside and outside the Our Lady of the Lake system. Instead, much of the discussion focused on changing my current vestibular physical therapy. I was told that my physical therapist "doesn't specialize in dizziness." My current therapist was recommended by another treating physician, and I would have appreciated a discussion about the clinical reasons for recommending a change and how it would complement my existing care rather than dismiss it.I also left the appointment with the understanding that I would not be able to receive treatment through this practice unless I participated in their physical therapy program. If that is the practice's policy, I believe it should be communicated clearly to patients before they wait months for a specialty appointment. If I misunderstood what was explained, I would appreciate clarification.I was also told, "You will never see Dr. Arriaga because he's a surgeon. You will never see Dr. Arriaga unless you're having surgery." After waiting months for this specialty appointment, that was unexpected and discouraging. My concern is not that I was evaluated by a nurse practitioner. My concern is that I did not feel heard. I was seeking someone who would listen to my complete history, consider my objective findings together, understand the significant functional impact this illness has had over the past five months, and collaborate with my broader medical team to determine the next steps in my care. Instead, I left feeling interrupted, dismissed, and without confidence that my history, functional limitations, or goals of care had been fully understood.I left feeling that I had been processed rather than evaluated. After waiting three months for a specialty consultation, that was profoundly disappointing. I expected a specialty practice to build upon the work already completed and to treat a complex patient with curiosity, careful listening, and collaboration. Instead, I left feeling that the opportunity to understand my case was lost because I was never given the chance to fully tell my story.

Takes time to answer questions. Never rushed.

Jennifer listened to my concerns and got in touch with Dr. Arriaga and they both made good decisions to do bloodwork and get answers. Turns out there was infection and my meds were changed. I got immediate relief with those decisions.

Jennifer Way, as usual, was very aware of my history and my previous episodes with vertigo. Jennifer was thorough in the questions she posed and discussed my medications and my current needs to maintain my current level of wellness. I just lost my husband who was always at my side when I experienced any problems so Jennifer reassured me that if I needed anything to call and they would help me to resolve any issues. I feel so confident with this group's care.

The person seemed to be in a hurry to get me and my spouse out of the examination room as quickly as possible. No show for thoughts of questions.
